Home Hill is on the south bank of the Burdekin river and is 100km south of Townsville. The Bruce Highway passes right through the centre of Home Hill. Home Hill is a town built around a sugar cane mill and strangely is flat with no hills at all.
Home Hill is a medium sized town with a range of pubs, shops and services. The race track is popular as is the jewelry and gemstone display.
Home Hill is very welcoming to drive in visitors and provides excellent facilities to encourage travelers to stop and spend a little in the local shops.
South of Home Hill is Mount Inkerman and a road to the lookout on top leads to magnificent views of the area.
The Burdekin bridge is an amazing feat of engineering that spans the Burdekin River leading to Ayr.
Work is available with local farms on a seasonal basis. The main casual employment is during the sugar cane harvest.
Markets are held at the race track on race days
The race track is on the southern edge of Home Hill and the road next to it is signposted ‘Groper Creek’. This is an all bitumen road to a lovely caravan park / camping ground. Groper Creek has a jetty that provides good fishing and next to it a boat ramp.
Home Hill is well known to regular Queensland travelers for it’s great free camping options. The street parallel to the main street is offered for travelers to stay and rest. The ‘Comfort Stop’ is a very well equipped centre that includes toilets, showers, kitchen and wash up facilities. In addition to the comfort stop Home Hill opens it’s showgrounds to visitors and is becoming very popular particularly with older caravaners (grey nomads).
South of Home Hill at Inkerman is a turn off toward the coast and a riverside camping spot known as Wallace’s landing. Good fishing and crabbing can be had here.
Further south is another turn off to the beach village of Wunjunga. This is a delightful little place to spend a few days fishing and crabbing. Stay at the ‘Funny Dunny” campground for a small donation.
